Gus Logie, the small built Trinidad batsman, made his debut against India in 1982-83. He was lucky to remain in the side after initially failing and it was only in the fourth test that he made a mark after smashing a brilliant 130. After some mixed outings with the bat in tours against India and Australia, he got picked for the series against England. Two ordinary series at home and away to New Zealand followed. He finally found permanent form in India and a wonderful century at Eden Gardens, Calcutta indeed stood out.
Subsequently, he became more consistent and in England in 1988 he shined with 364 runs at an average of 72.80, making him the Man of the Match at Lord's for his 81 and 95 not out. However, the following tour to England saw him fail and consequently lose his place in the national side for good.
Gus Logie remained with the third-division club side, Texaco-Brighton, clearly stating his loyalties to the club from where he emerged. After retiring in 1993, he donned the coach's hat, taking charge of Canada and then directed West Indies to their triumph in the 2004 Champions Trophy.
