Wisden Cricketer of the Year 1980
In the days when helmets where unheard of, how a batsman must have felt facing the 6 foot 8 inches Joel Garner, is anybody's guess. Joel Garner was fast and he was mean. He was an important part of the West Indian pace attack, which comprised bowlers like Michael Holding, Andy Roberts, Colin Croft and Andy Roberts. During Joel Garner's playing days, West Indies remained almost unbeatable.
Apart from an ample dose of short deliveries, a batsman brave enough to face Joel Garner could expect an unplayable yorker, which invariably crashed onto the toes.
Also known as the Big Bird, for obvious reasons, Joel Garner finished his test career with an enviable record. In 58 test matches, Joel Garner took 259 wickets at an amazing average of 20.97. His one-day record is equally impressive- 146 wickets in 98 matches at an average of 18.84.
Joel Garner played county cricket for Somerset and ran amok the batsmen there.
