Phil Simmons was one of the finest all rounders of the game, yet his Test record does little to show his real talent. He made just one Test century while performing his duties as an opening batsman for the West Indies. The highlight of his cricketing career however came undoubtedly when he guided Leicestershire to the County Championship in 1996. He scored a total of 1244 runs, took 56 wickets and finished with 35 catches: a true all round performance indeed. Early on in his career, in 1988, he was hit on the head by a David Lawrence delivery, which turned out to be so serious that he required a brain surgery. However he returned to play the game he played so well. After retirement, he took up coaching and landed the difficult job of coaching a weak Zimbabwean side. Unfortunately he couldn't sustain the job and was removed in 2005.
