Purists, furious at the cheeky unconventional technique of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, have labeled the technique "crabby". The criticism though, seems to fall dead on Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who remains busy making runs, and probably counts them as his response to the sneering critics.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul's debut came in 1994 against England. He was Lara's partner when the latter surpassed Sir Garfield Sobers' record of 365 runs. Shivnarine Chanderpaul earned much praises from his seasoned teammate for the maturity with which he partnered the stand of 219 runs.
Despite being an immensely talented batsman, Shivnarine Chanderpaul had to wait for 19 test matches to get his first test hundred, before which he had scored 15 test match fifties.
In 2002-2003 series against Australia, Shivnarine Chanderpaul silenced those who labeled him as mere accumulator. He scored the third fastest test century, which came in only 67 runs.
Shivnarine was also made the captain of the West Indian side in March 2005. He led a weak team, meeting with almost no success, till after nineteen tests he resigned from captaincy.
Apart from the redoubtable Lara, Shivnarine Chanderpaul is the key batsman for the West Indies.
