Sir Vivian Richards, popularly known as Viv Richards, was probably one of the most devastating batsmen of all time. He played shots all over the ground and the bowlers only wished that he went off strike! His characteristic slow walk to the pitch, chewing of gum and looking the bowler directly in the eye, along with his immense talent, made him one of the most charismatic cricketers in the history of the game. He was also known for his courage in not wearing helmets even while facing the fastest bowlers in the world.
Viv Richards made his debut in 1974 against India in Bangalore. By making 192 not out in his very second Test in Delhi, he announced his arrival to world cricket in style. From there on it was just an upward climb. He played 121 Tests and made a staggering 8540 runs at 50.23, which included 24 centuries and 45 half centuries. His ODI record was just as impressive, and he scored 6,721 runs in 187 matches at an average of 47.00, with another 11 centuries.
Richards was also a brilliant captain and led his side to victory 27 times in 50 Tests and lost just 8 matches. He was a complete cricketer who was named in 2000 as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Century.
