Andy Flower will always be regarded as the finest batsman in the conflict-ridden country, Zimbabwe. He led the weak Zimbabwe side- inspiring and setting examples to his men. At one point of time, he was captaining the side and wicket keeping, besides holding together the rather shaky Zimbabwean batting line-up. Andy Flower made his debut against the touring Indian side and impressed everyone with a well-played half century. Since then, Andy Flower has seen the rise and a fall of his beloved Zimbabwean side before being embroiled in the murky issue of politics. Andy Flower's captaincy fetched for Zimbabwe its first test victory against Pakistan in 1994-95. He became the first Zimbabwean to lead the test tour to England in 2000. Andy Flower's finest moments in test cricket came in the India tour in 2001. He amassed 540 runs in the series and thus grabbed the respect that he felt the world owed to Zimbabwean cricket.

Andy Flower ran into an ugly spat with the Zimbabwean government, when he and Henry Olonga decided to protest against the 'death of democracy' in Zimbabwe during the World Cup series in 2003. Subsequently, Andy Flower was forced to take retirement from test cricket. Andy Flower has since then played and South Australia and Essex. Andy Flower made 63 test appearances and scored 4794 runs at an average of 51.51; and in 213 one-day internationals, Andy Flower has scored 6786 runs at an average of 35.34 runs per match.
